OPENING LEARNING CENTRE: What is
the Open Learning Program?
The Open Learning program provides an innovative
alternative approach to the school curriculum across years 7-12. This learning program aims to span across
the school curriculum by providing students with skills in handling information
and problem solving. It concentrates on the individual student or small
groups of students in a supervised setting where the teacher is a guide
rather than an instructor.
One part of the Open Learning program is:
·
a program of Personal Interest Projects for
students from Year 7 - 10 identified as potential “open learners”.
This will provide Year 7 students willing to
contract for self-paced learning and improve their knowledge and skills in a
particular subject with a chance to work individually or in small groups. These
students are withdrawn from class for a double period each week for ten
weeks to complete their chosen
task. The double period varies across
the week so that no one subject is affected.
The success of the Pilot program in 1994 has confirmed a school
commitment to this learning program.
You will hear of other activities. Each year they
vary according to the interests and abilities of the students and staff
involved.
If
you are going to be an effective member of the school and obtain the most
benefit from your stay here, you need to be a participant, rather than an
onlooker. Some students complain that there is little to do, but they are
usually the ones who are not prepared to make the effort.
Take
part and you will broaden your interests.
