Note-Taking
Methods
- Always know why you are taking notes and what kind of notes you
require.
- Review your
notes at regular intervals to make sure they are relevant.
- Identify each set of
notes. Write in the date, subject, author's name etc. If you are making notes from a book write the page numbers of the
book your notes refer to. If you have borrowed the book from a 1ibrary also record
the call number and the library from which you borrowed the book . This also
applies to internet URLs. This makes it easier to locate if you have missed
something out or are required to provide a bibliography..
-
Be
brief. Concentrate on key words and phrases
and ignore unimportant details.
-
Indicate
main items by underlining, colour highlighting, indenting, numbering, lettering
etc.
-
If
you are writing notes from a class handout, write headings next to a paragraph
on the handout and use the heading in your notes.
- Make certain your notes make sense.
